$250 million fantasy film breaks streaming record: Number 1 in 112 (!) countries and 50 million views in just 4 days – Kino News

It did so-so at the box office, but it’s even better in streaming: “Red One – Christmas Alert” with Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans has recently been available on Amazon Prime Video – and is the clear number 1 there.

On November 7th, 2024 came “Red One – Christmas Alert“ the latest film with Dwayne Johnson in the cinemas – which also includes “Captain America” Chris Evans, Lucy Liu (“Charlie’s Angels”) and Oscar winner JK Simmons Get involved (“Whiplash”). The production of the Christmas fantasy adventure cost a whopping $250 million, but the film has not yet grossed more than $175.5 million at the box office. But what would be a financial catastrophe in other cases is not so bad here – and is now being put into perspective.

Because The cinema box office is essentially additional income, after all, the film was originally produced for streaming. And that’s exactly where the calculation goes for the makers Jake Kasdan (“Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle”) is now fully on.

“Red One” on Amazon Prime Video*

For everyone with a Prime subscription, “Red One” has been available for a few days now at no additional cost on Amazon’s in-house streaming platform Prime Video – and is (of course) the measure of all things there. Can we expect the announcement of “Red One 2” soon?

“Red One”: Best Prime Video launch of all time

As has now become known, “Red One” was able to generate more than 50 million views in the first four days after Prime Video launched. This of course makes the star-studded fantasy film the biggest hit in the history of the platform, among other things Deadline reported. For comparison: The “Road House” with Jake Gyllenhaal (whose sequel was quickly announced) was also able to generate 50 million views, but it took ten days to do so – more than twice as long.

And it also shows elsewhere that “Red One” is not just a popular film, but a global phenomenon. As was the case at the weekend, “Red One” tops the film charts on Amazon Prime Video in 112 (!) countries. These are all regions that use the evaluation portal Flixpatrol captured in its daily rankings!

In the end, is the film worth two hours of your time? Well, at least we at FILMSTARTS cannot recommend “Red One” to you with a clear conscience. Author Sidney Schering promises in our criticism “Lots of muscles, little charisma, even fewer laughs” and warns against using a star vehicle that is “neither convincing in terms of dialogue humor nor in the riot scenes”. In the end it was only 1.5 out of 5 possible stars.

Sci-Fi fans, on the other hand, can look forward to an absolute must-see that has recently been included in their Amazon Prime Video subscription. You can find out more about the influential milestone here:
