There are films that are rolled out to an almost unbearable length – not so “The Shallows – Danger from the depths”: The survival thriller is crisp for an hour and a half. Blake Lively takes it into it with a voracious shark.
Rarely was a shark thriller as nasty as “The Shallows danger from the depth“: While protagonist Nancy (Blake Lively) is terrorized by a shark, because she has the saving bank in sight all the time. But Nancy is not only a victim – it also gets dangerous for the shark, because the tough surfer does everything possible to put the bloodthirsty cartilage fish out to save her skin.
You can see this tough struggle for survival tonight on TV: RTL two shows “The Shallows – Danger from the Depth” on Sunday, May 4, 2025 at 8:15 p.m. The repetition is available in the early morning at 0.30 a.m. – however, it is only something for night schools. Depending on the time and without advertising breaks, so that the crunchy term of only 87 minutes comes into play, you can of course also “The Shallows” on Blu-ray, DVD or as a paid VoD, for example at Amazon Prime Videolook.

In “The Shallows” it says “Ms. Vs. Hai” – because apart from protagonist Nancy there are hardly any other figures. Nancy is a passionate surfer and visits her mother’s death a beach that was particularly important. In the lonely place she enjoys the fantastic waves. But then it is attacked by a white shark and can just save herself on a rock within sight of the beach with an evil bite wound on the leg.
There the young woman is stuck while the shark pulls his circles and would immediately be attracted by the blood pour if Nancy should go into the water. But with the resistant young woman the survival instinct was awakened, and so she forged one plan after the other how she could save herself – although she is not shy away from going to close combat with her attacker …
Blake Lively delivers an excellent performance in “The Shallows” And scores as a stubborn surfer who looks at a lot of patience and without whining the danger, and does not shy away from it, to grab her wounds on a rugged rock even macgyver.
Atmospheric-intimate survival thriller with weaknesses
That director Jaume Collet-Serra (“Unknown identity”) in his “Despite the high-gloss look, wonderfully dirty, and despite the 17 million-solar budget atmospheric and intimate survival thriller” Fightly focused on the simple story of the struggle between Surfer and Hai, “The Shallows” makes a “simple but effective tear”, as the official film start criticism says. However, the tension is sometimes disturbed when the camera of Flavio Martínez Labiano (“The Gunman”) A little too often rests on Lively’s well -trained body.
The fact that there is sometimes a confusion in the almost 90 minutes in addition to tension is due to the times that are displayed – these are not always conclusive. And in the end it means Collet-Serra a little too well and delivers a fairly action-heavy finale, which then makes the previously so straight shark thriller becomes a little trashy. In our criticism, we therefore awarded three out of five possible stars.
And by the way: if you licked blood after “The Shallows” (we couldn’t help it now), Can then be the shark horror in the subscription to Amazon Prime Video “”Something in the Water” look at. We can only limited you with two out of five stars in the film start criticism, but for genre fans who have a Prime subscription anyway, the film may still be worth a look.
