There was once a time when there were… Zombie movies almost extinct after the video market in particular was flooded with underground genre representatives and the audience was oversaturated. Then a small British film came around the corner. Although director Danny Boyle doesn’t want it to be seen as a zombie film and the creatures in it aren’t undead and therefore basically not zombies at all, he was worried “28 Days Later” for a zombie revival. 22 years later, the genre is once again on the verge of sinking into insignificance. Only another film from the cosmos by director Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland can help: 18 years after the sequel “28 Weeks Later” comes the unexpected sequel “28 Years Later”.
The first trailer gives a look into the changed world – and reveals a nasty surprise at 1:48 minutes:
Yes, that’s right: That’s Jim played by Cillian Murphy, who played the main role in “28 Days Later”. Apparently an infected person caught him and he has also been living a quasi-undead existence ever since. Not a nice realization for fans of the first part that there was never a happy ending for Jim.
Just like the very real corona virus SARS-CoV-2, the rage virus grown in a laboratory could never be eradicated and has become part of the new reality – only with the difference that the rage virus never lost its deadly nature has. And so the world could never recover from it. “28 Weeks Later” already indicated that new local outbreaks could occur again and again, threatening all life in the surrounding area. Actor Ralph Fiennes already revealed IndieWirethat at least Great Britain is still in a state of emergency 28 years later:
“Britain has been afflicted for 28 years by this terrible plague of violent, rabid people with few uninfected communities. The focus is on a young boy who seeks medical attention to help his dying mother. He leads his mother through this beautiful northern English countryside, but of course the infected are hiding around them in the woods, hills and scrub. He finds a doctor who is a man you might think is strange and cranky, but who is actually a good soul.”
“28 Years Later” is the beginning of a new trilogy
The fact that another film is coming after such a long time is in itself a small sensation for fans. After all, you also have to admit that the previous films – as influential as at least the first of them may have been – cannot necessarily be counted among the biggest box office hits of all. With a combined budget of $17 million, “28 Days Later” and “28 Weeks Later” grossed a combined $149 million. For comparison: “Blair Witch Project” With production costs of $60,000, the film grossed $248 million worldwide.
To everyone’s surprise, Boyle and Garland announced an entire trilogy with a huge budget of $180 million, $60 million per film. Filming on Boyle’s first film, 28 Years Later, wrapped at the end of July this year. The next film, “28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple”realized by director Nia DaCosta (“Candyman”). Whether the planned third film will follow may depend on how well the two are received by cinema audiences.
What is certain is that it was possible to unite a real star ensemble in front of the camera: there is Bond favorite Aaron Taylor-Johnson, then Ralph Fiennes, Jodie Comer, Jack O’Connell, Erin Kellyman, Edvin Ryding, Chi- Lewis Parry and Nathan Hall. With Cillian Murphy there is also a reunion with Jim from the first film from 2002. Fans will be excited to see what has become of him after all these years. The answer is on June 19, 2025when “28 Years Later” opens in German cinemas.
