The career of the once highest-paid Hollywood star has taken a few hits lately. His penultimate blockbuster “Black Adam” flopped at the box office, and Dwayne Johnson lost the DC role on top of that. His latest work should be there for improvement “Red One – Christmas Alert” worry, but here too there were discords. Johnson dismissed a report of unprofessional behavior during filming; What remains is the meager box office result of 175 million US dollars in cinemas around the world (via Box Office Mojo). Given a production budget of up to $250 million, this is the next flop for the action star – or is it?
No trend reversal is expected in cinema sales, as Amazon released the Christmas film on December 12, 2024 available as a subscription on its streaming service Prime Video; only five weeks after its theatrical release and although it is still showing in many cinemas. But the decision could still have been right, because the company can now look forward to a record: According to Prime Video, “Red One” achieved 50 million views in just four days (via Variety). This is a new record by far. The streaming service announced in April that “Road House” Jake Gyllenhaal had the best debut on Prime Video, although the 50 million views were only achieved after two weeks.

Is “Red One” a success for Amazon and Dwayne Johnson?
“Red One” was actually supposed to be released in 2023, but at that time an exclusive launch on Prime Video was still planned. Due to the Hollywood strikes, planning was delayed and a theatrical release was added. However, the aim was never to compensate for the film’s high budget. At least that’s what Kevin Wilson, head of Amazon MGM’s cinema division, claimed in an interview with Variety:
“Regardless of whether people like the film or not, our business model calculates the value of these films differently. If we can release these films in theaters and cover our P&A costs (editor’s note), why shouldn’t we? We get a huge marketing campaign that is paid for before the film starts streaming.”
Wilson also addressed a circumstance that makes it extremely difficult to independently assess the success of streaming films. Ultimately, the business model aims to retain subscribers through such titles. So are 50 million views in four days enough to make such an expensive production profitable? Since Prime Video’s statements on this question have to be viewed with the necessary amount of skepticism – who unnecessarily openly admits that they have a flop on their hands? – this extremely exciting question unfortunately remains unanswered.
Even those responsible may not yet know whether the expenditure on “Red One” is really worth it. Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios, finally emphasized that based on the positive reactions from the audience, it is assumed that the action film will become an integral part of the Christmas season for many over the next few years. So perhaps it will only take some time to see whether Dwayne Johnson had to cope with his second flop in a row.
