The 2020s have really not been a good one for comic book films so far. Yes, there were outliers like “Spider-Man: No Way Home” with a box office result of $1.95 billion and this year’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” with legendary ones $1.34 billion with the high age rating. However, there are box office flops like this “The Marvels” with $206 million and “Madame Web” with just once 100 million US dollars. The latter comes from this Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU). With a total of five films, Sony Pictures’ Marvel universe has had two major box office flops. In addition to “Madame Web” also took place “Morbius” no audience. Only that “Venom”-Films were able to gather a loyal fan base thanks to Tom Hardy. It should also be mentioned here that these films managed to gross less and less with each part.
With “Kraven the Hunter” The third SSU film is already coming up this year. How good the Marvel film from director JC Chandor (“Triple Frontier”) will be received by the audience can hardly be estimated in advance. The title anti-hero Sergei Kravinoff alias Kraven is relatively unknown to cinema audiences outside of the comic book scene. His actor, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, is considered a hot contender to succeed Daniel Craig as His Majesty’s next agent. But he’s not James Bond yet. And as long as he isn’t a double-zero agent, the 34-year-old is no guarantee of a box office hit. After all, as a Bond candidate, the training for his tough body should benefit him. At Jimmy Kimmel Live He revealed that he trained hard for six months and followed a strict diet plan, including abstinence from alcohol for two years, to prepare for the role.
As a Bond actor, producer Barbara Broccoli demands, you are not allowed to have any other, career-defining role. According to a report by The Wrapthen “Kraven the Hunter” could be the first and last time that Taylor-Johnson scurries across the screen as a superhumanly strong hunter. Accordingly, Sony will show the Marvel film in around 1,000 fewer cinemas in the USA compared to “Venom: The Last Dance”. The reason: Apparently the studio wants to phase out the SSU, which is considered to have failed. “Kraven the Hunter” is supposed to represent the unexpected finale. Of course, that could change if the film turns out to be a success. At the moment, however, no one seems to be expecting it anymore. The film speaks to one Age rating from 16 years an adult audience and the trailers seem quite appealing at first glance:
Sony Pictures wants to focus more on Spider-Man
However, that doesn’t mean that Sony is withdrawing from the Marvel universe entirely, after all, the studio owns one of the most valuable comic book brands ever. This needs to be used and must be used in order not to lose the rights. So instead of concentrating on the villains and working towards an anti-Avengers in the form of a “Sinister Six” film, according to sources, they now want to concentrate more on the most important character in the rights catalog: Spider-Man. With “Beyond the Spider-Verse” and the upcoming spin-off series “Spider-Noir” are already well underway in the animated film sector. The worldwide audience is eagerly awaiting this “Spider-Man 4” with Tom Holland as Peter Parker aka Spidey.
Basically, the idea was interesting to focus on the bad guys and maybe add a Spider-Man at some point. Fans have long hoped that Miles Morales would eventually make his live-action debut in SSU. However, nothing will come of this. “Kraven the Hunter” with Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Russell Crowe, Alessandro Nivola, Ariana DeBose, Christopher Abbott and Fred Hechinger starts on December 12, 2024 in German cinemas.
