But the opposite has occurred: films like “Lisa Frankenstein” prove that the need for subversive, shrill and emotional-lung sanding continues-especially for those who cannot be found in standardized Hollywood stories.
The history of the youthful outsiders Lisa Swallows (Kathryn Newton), who accidentally recovered a dead boy and went with him through a macabre, romantically over -the -top Odyssey, has long since found an enthusiastic fan base, which recognizes herself in her quirk, wildness and sensitivity. “Lisa Frankenstein”, written by Diablo Cody (“Jennifer’s Body”) and staged by Zelda Williams (“Never”), was published by FOCUS features on February 9, 2024 and made it available digitally shortly afterwards. Critics reactions and cinema numbers remained at first, but a strong fan movement quickly developed online: cosplay, fan art, viral videos and even marriage proposals, inspired by the film, made it a cult object. Director Williams reports:
“I met people who were tattooed by the Lisa flash-and it didn’t just happen once.”
Leading actress Kathryn Newton explains:
“We created our own fandom.”
What makes “Lisa Frankenstein” so special is not just the story itself, but the strong emotional bond that develops fans. Newton tells of a meeting with a young girl who felt safer after the death of her father by wearing Lisa’s costume:
“It’s like armor … Clothing shows who you want to be, who you want to protect or hide.”

Online artists such as Tess Givnish or Marsh (alias Halloween Homemaker) also feel an unusual closeness to cast and crew-their works are regularly recognized by Newton and Williams. Marsh emphasizes the queer under tones of the film, although this does not explicitly treat LGBTQ+topics:
“The story of the outsider that is not seen until he finds his voice is deep queer subtext.”
Clothing plays a central role in the fan camp of the film – many dress like Lisa, apply merchandise, design stickers or sewing entire costumes. The professional cosplayer Cee Kay has implemented several iconic looks of the film – including a elaborately handmade version of the dream ball dress. It reports of overwhelming encouragement at fan events such as the Megacon Orlando:
“Almost everyone wanted to talk to me about Lisa.”
The film inspires conversations, new friendships and identification figures-like the 12-year-old Roxie, who has seen “Lisa Frankenstein” over 30 times, gave her fan art Newton and whose school yearbook photo shows her in a Lisa shirt:
“Kathryn has my picture! She thought it was cool – that made me feel cool.”
