“Moana 2” and “Wicked” are undoubtedly the films of the moment: While Disney’s animated adventure currently has worldwide revenue of 717 million US dollars, the fantasy musical has 525 million US dollars (figures via Box Office Mojo). In one respect, however, both are at a disadvantage, compared to a work that was first shown in cinemas in 2014: “Interstellar”.
Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi spectacle celebrated its re-release in the USA on December 6, 2024, which came with a catch: “Interstellar” could only be seen on IMAX screens. Many film fans didn’t miss this, which is why the work with Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Chestain and Anne Hathaway is once again causing a sensation ten years after its theatrical release.
So reported Varietythat “Interstellar” took in $4.57 million in its first weekend, more than any new film released that weekend. In addition, an average of $27,500 was grossed per screening – even more than “Moana 2” and “Wicked”. Of course, those responsible didn’t need to be asked twice and expanded the re-release from 166 to 320 IMAX screens. “Interstellar” was also certain of success in the second weekend: with additional revenue of 3.5 million US dollars, the sci-fi film brought in sales of 10.8 million euros in the ten days since its re-release Collider reported. This also secured Nolan’s film the record as the most successful IMAX re-release of all time.
“Interstellar” also had a surprising guest star at the time:
Not just “Interstellar”: Another new release celebrated triumph in 2024
At a time when movie theaters are struggling with declining audience numbers, “Interstellar” could hopefully help start a trend. Because if the new films don’t attract enough people, then maybe older works? Bringing back earlier titles happens every now and then, but apart from well-known film series such as “Harry Potter” and “The Lord of the Rings”, it is rarely done on such a large scale. It’s not just the success of Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi epic that proves that there would be an audience for it.
Finally cared “Coraline” for a true cinema sensation this year: The iconic stop-motion film was released again in cinemas to mark its 15th birthday – and grossed $53 million worldwide over the summer alone (via Variety). Looking back, it almost seems surprising that before the cinema release of “Gladiator 2” didn’t take advantage of the opportunity “Gladiator” to be brought back to cinemas nationwide. The expenses for such a campaign are likely to be manageable, but sales can easily run into the millions because many film fans would not miss out on experiencing such a spectacle on the big screen; for the younger ones it could even be the first time. We will therefore be curious to see whether those responsible will change their thinking.
If you are now interested in the two re-released films: “Interstellar” can be found on Netflix and at WOW; You can do “Coraline”. on Prime Video Buy or rent on stream.
